Global patterns in water flux partitioning: Irrigated and rainfed agriculture drives asymmetrical flux to vegetation over runoff

چکیده
The partitioning of precipitation water input on land between green (evapotranspiration) and blue (runoff) fluxes distributes the annually renewable freshwater resource among sectors ecosystems. patterns main drivers this are not fully understood around global area. We decipher worldwide key determinants flux investigate its predictability based a machine learning model. Available data for 3,614 hydrological catchments model application to area agree in showing mostly larger than flux. Possible expansion/intensification irrigated and/or rainfed agriculture feed growing human population, along with climate warming, will tend increase asymmetry, jeopardizing security. developed presents promising predictive tool future availability under various forthcoming land-use change scenarios world.

Below-ground carbon flux and partitioning: global patterns and response to temperature
1. The fraction of gross primary production (GPP) that is total below-ground carbon flux (TBCF) and the fraction of TBCF that is below-ground net primary production (BNPP) represent globally significant C fluxes that are fundamental in regulating ecosystem C balance. However, global estimates of the partitioning of GPP to TBCF and of TBCF to BNPP, as well as the absolute size of these fluxes, r...
متن کاملGlobal assessment of urban and peri-urban agriculture: irrigated and rainfed croplands
The role of urban agriculture in global food security is a topic of increasing discussion. Existing research on urban and peri-urban agriculture consists largely of case studies that frequently use disparate definitions of urban and peri-urban agriculture depending on the local context and study objectives. This lack of consistency makes quantification of the extent of this practice at the glob...
متن کاملSynthetic- and bio-polymer use for runoff water quality management in irrigated agriculture.
Low concentrations of synthetic- or bio-polymers in irrigation water can nearly eliminate sediment, N, ortho- and total-P, DOM, pesticides, micro-organisms, and weed seed from runoff. These environmentally safe polymers are employed in various sensitive uses including food processing, animal feeds, and potable water purification. The most common synthetic polymer is anionic, high purity polyacr...
متن کاملTowards Global Mapping of Irrigated Agriculture
We developed an irrigation mapping methodology that relies on remotely sensed inputs from MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument, globally extensive ancillary sources of gridded climate and agricultural data and on an advanced image classification algorithm. In the first step, we used climate-based indices of surface moisture status and a map of cultivated lands to pro...
متن کامل2 Zooming in on the Global Hotspots of Rainfed Agriculture in Water - constrained Environments
Rainfed agriculture is practised on 80% of the world’s agricultural area and generates 60–70% of the world’s staple food1 (FAOSTAT, 2005). In semi-arid and dry subhumid zones, rainfed agriculture dominates food production systems, and water is a key limiting factor to crop growth (SEI, 2005). Since approximately 70% of the world’s poor are women, the importance of rainfed sources of food weighs...
